Integral Assessment

While practicing the loving kindness exercise I was very agitated. I tried to go in with an open mind and tried to get into the mantra but I could not. Then I became agitated because why would I sit here for 10 minutes and repeat this if I don’t feel like it’s helping anything. I should be playing with my kids, doing laundry etc. It just didn’t seem like something I’d like to do.

The area I chose in the assessment to be my focus of growth and development is biological. Specifically the lines of fitness and nutrition. I try every day to better my fitness and nutrition but at the same time I am met with many setbacks. I was extremely motivated after I had my second child in October to get in shape. Once I was cleared to start exercising I focused on a clean diet that met my caloric needs and started going to the gym. In 3 months I lost 20 pounds. Then I stagnated. I got bored of working out. I wanted my sweets, pizza etc back. I am really trying to refocus. I need to get back to implementing my fitness regimen and work on controlling my cravings.

  1. I feel that way every time I do these exercises! Sometimes a diet that is too clean makes it harder. Everyone say that moderation is key. On a side note I think that loosing weight is great but exercise is important for health. Happiness should not come from being skinny. Being able to play and enjoy time with your kids is more important than looking like a super model.

  2. Hello,

I felt the same way about this week's assignment, very agitated, and as well I felt like it was a waste of time. I don't know anyone in there right mind that would find repeating any phrase for ten minutes straight very helpful nor do I see how this could possibly help relieve stress or get your mind to focus. I get bored with my workouts too, however, I always challenge myself to try new things when working out. At the gym I go to, they provide classes like zumba, yoga, qigong, swimming or an abdominal class. I personally have tried doing qigong for awhile, but due to work I can't make the class anymore. Also you could try walking around or playing in the park with your children on days you don't feel like working out, or try a new class instead of working out. As for your cravings, remember we on a diet it is not good to keep all the things you love away from you; yes, it can trigger set backs if you consume so much of it, however, by rewarding your efforts of working out having something you crave/like the most for that week just once can also be motivation to workout. Tell yourself you are not going to eat any of it unless you have met your goals for that week and at the end of the week have whatever it is you are craving just in moderation.

  3. Hi,
What was it about the exercise that made you feel agitated? Do you think if you would have tried the exercise at a different time or day that you would have felt differently about the exercise? Do you think that time has anything to do with how we perceive different experiences? We teach our students in yoga that if you were to take a yoga class at 8 in the morning it would be a very different practice than if you took a class at 4 in the afternoon. I find this to be true but, what are your thoughts? Would you ever be willing to attempt the exercise again? I am just curious that is all not trying to push:)! Have a great week
    Ramsie
